Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am a media major at Hunter College. When I first entered college I was very unsure of what to do in terms of my major, but also with my life. As I looked for some guidance, many early memories of watching television with my mom came to mind. Since I can remember I loved watching television with my mom, it was a bonding experience of sorts and I hold it dear in my heart. We always would watch either TCM, Turner Classic Movies, or the Food Network, two of my mom’s favorite channels. I loved the introduction the speakers would give before the movies because it felt like a backstage pass into the movie and the speakers gave me something important to look out for in each film. As I got older, I began to pay more attention to not only the narrative aspects of a film, but also the technical construction of the scenes and how they generated distinct feelings in both my mom and myself. Filmmakers have so much power when creating a film because it is their ideas about the project that are on display for the world to see. I think that’s why it’s especially important for accurate representation of people of color and minorities to occur in feature films and a school project. For me, film has always been a way of seeing the world, and I hope that in time I will develop the skills to inspire people to change the world for the better.
